281. Defiant Teenager? What to Do in the First 10 Minutes of a Power Struggle
Your teenager refuses to put down the phone.
They argue about homework, curfew, chores, getting out the door, or nearly every request you make.
You repeat yourself. They get louder. You get louder. Before long, the original issue has disappeared, and you are fighting about their attitude, your parenting, and who is going to win.
The first 10 minutes of that power struggle matter.
Not because you have to win, but because this is where the argument either escalates or begins to settle.
In this episode of the Single Parenting Reset Show, parent and family coach Tess Connolly explains how to respond when your teenager becomes defiant, argumentative, or unwilling to cooperate.
You will learn why trying to overpower your teenager usually creates a bigger battle and why your most effective parenting tool is your ability to remain steadier than the conflict.
Tess walks you through a practical first-10-minutes plan you can use during arguments about:
- Screen time
- Homework
- Curfews
- Chores
- School attendance
- Getting out the door
- Family expectations
- Disrespectful language
- Refusal to cooperate
By the end of this episode, you will know how to:
Avoid matching your teenager’s intensity
Lower your voice instead of raising it
Use fewer words when your teen is already upset
Stop chasing every eye roll, sigh, or irritated tone
Hold one clear boundary without adding angry punishments
Pause an argument without abandoning the issue
Return later for problem-solving and repair
Apologize for your behavior without giving up the boundary
Recognize when defiance may require additional professional support
You will also hear exact scripts, including:
“I can see that you’re angry. The boundary is still the same.”
“You don’t have to agree with the decision, but I’m not going to keep arguing about it.”
“I’m not going to argue with you right now. I’m going to give us both a few minutes, and then we’ll come back to the issue.”
“I did not handle that well earlier. I’m sorry for how I spoke to you. The boundary still matters, but I want to handle it differently.”
You do not have to remain trapped in daily power struggles with your tween or teen.
If you are constantly arguing, repeating yourself, changing consequences, or questioning whether you are being too strict or too permissive, book a Parent Reset Strategy Session with Tess.
During the session, you will look at what is happening in your family, identify what is keeping the conflict going, and begin developing a calmer and more effective parenting plan.
