283. Teen Lying: What to Do and How to Rebuild Trust
Has your teen ever looked you directly in the eye and told you something you knew was not true?
Teen lying can make you question more than the story your teen is telling you. It can make you question your relationship, your judgment, and whether you can trust anything they say.
When you are parenting on your own, this can feel especially destabilizing. You may not have another parent in the home to compare notes with, and you may feel completely responsible for figuring out what is true and how serious the situation is.
Your instinct may be to ask more questions, present more evidence, increase the consequences, or keep arguing until your teen finally admits what happened. Unfortunately, turning the conversation into a courtroom often creates more defensiveness and denial—not more honesty.
