284. Teen Lying: What To Say When They Deny Or Blame
What do you say when your teen looks you in the eye and denies something you feel almost certain happened?
What if they blame a friend, a sibling, a teacher, or their other parent?
When you believe your teenager is lying, it is easy to get pulled into questioning, proving, arguing, and trying to force a confession. But you do not need your teen to admit everything before you can respond clearly and protectively.
In this Quick Reset episode of The Single Parenting Reset Show, Tess Connolly, LCSW, shares five practical scripts for responding when your tween or teen denies what happened, blames someone else, changes their story, returns with the truth, or when you simply do not have enough information yet.
IN THIS EPISODE, YOU’LL LEARN:
• What to say when you have reliable information but your teen keeps denying what happened
• How to acknowledge another person’s involvement without allowing your teen to avoid responsibility
• How to respond when your teen’s story keeps changing
• What to say when your teen comes back and finally tells you the truth
• How to make a safe parenting decision when you suspect dishonesty but do not know the complete truth
• Why calm parenting does not mean ignoring dishonesty or removing accountability
You do not have to turn the conversation into a courtroom. You can respond to the information you have, hold the appropriate boundary, and leave a clear path back to honesty and repair.
