285. Back-To-School Anxiety In Teens: Support Without Reinforcing Avoidance
Your teen says their stomach hurts, they barely slept, and now they are refusing to go to school.
Do you push them to attend? Let them stay home? Or call someone for help?
Back-to-school anxiety is common, but not every “I’m not going” means the same thing.
In this episode of The Single Parenting Reset Show, Tess Connolly, LCSW, explains the important differences between normal reluctance, anxiety, school avoidance, and a pattern that requires professional support.
You will learn:
• Why anxiety-related physical symptoms can be genuine
• How avoidance temporarily lowers anxiety but may make the next school day harder
• When parental support begins turning into repeated rescue
• Why appropriate school accommodations are not the same as avoidance
• A three-part response that combines validation, confidence, and action
• When to contact your teen’s pediatrician, school, or a mental health professional
You do not have to choose between dismissing your teen’s anxiety and allowing anxiety to control every decision.
You can take their distress seriously, remain curious about what is underneath it, and help them take the next manageable step.
When school avoidance is persistent or connected to significant anxiety, depression, physical symptoms, bullying, or safety concerns, involve your teen’s pediatrician, school, and a licensed mental health professional.
