290. What to Say When Your Teen Says Vaping Is No Big Deal: 5 Scripts
You find a vape in your teenager’s room, backpack, or pocket. When you ask about it, they shrug and say:
“It’s not a big deal.”
“Everyone does it.”
“It’s only nicotine.”
“I can stop whenever I want.”
“You’re completely overreacting.”
Those statements can immediately pull you into an argument. You may feel compelled to prove how dangerous vaping is, demand a confession, or give a severe consequence before you understand what is actually happening.
But you do not have to convince your teen that vaping is serious before you can respond seriously.
In Episode 289, we talked about the first conversation to have after discovering that your teen has been vaping. In today’s Quick Reset, we are getting even more practical.
Tess gives you five exact scripts for responding when your teen minimizes, defends, or dismisses their vaping.
You’ll learn what to say when your teen tells you:
- “Vaping is no big deal.”
- “Everyone does it.”
- “It’s only nicotine.”
- “I can stop whenever I want.”
- “You’re completely overreacting.”
You’ll also learn why arguing, lecturing, and piling on frightening information can make your teen defend vaping more strongly—even when part of them may already be worried.
These scripts will help you:
- Stay calm without becoming passive.
- Hold a clear boundary without demanding agreement.
- Move beyond the argument and assess what is actually happening.
- Ask about frequency, cravings, stress, peer pressure, and access.
- Help your teen become more honest about whether stopping feels difficult.
- Protect your relationship while still taking nicotine use seriously.
Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and can affect areas of the developing adolescent brain connected to attention, learning, mood, and impulse control. Young people can also begin showing signs of nicotine dependence before they are vaping every day. CDC: E-Cigarette Use Among Youth
Your goal is not to frighten or shame your teen. Your goal is to make it safer for them to tell you the truth—and then take the appropriate next step.
