297. Single Moms Raising Teen Boys: What Your Son Needs From You—and From Male Mentors
Your teenage son may be taller than you, stronger than you, pushing for more independence—and acting like he needs you less.
But that doesn’t necessarily mean he needs less connection.
In this episode of The Single Parenting Reset Show, I’m joined by relational and men’s coach Mike Elliott for an honest conversation about what teenage boys may be communicating underneath the shutdown, defensiveness, anger, and “Leave me alone.”
Because sometimes what looks like disrespect or withdrawal is actually a young person who doesn’t yet know what to do with everything happening inside of him.
Mike and I talk about what it means for a teen boy to be under-resourced emotionally and relationally—and why connection, emotional safety, support, and healthy mentorship matter so much as boys move toward adulthood.
We also talk specifically about the experience of single moms raising sons.
How do you remain the safe place without trying to fix everything?
How do you recognize the tenderness that may still be there underneath your son's growing strength and independence?
And how do you help him find healthy men to learn from when Dad may not be available—or may not be able to provide the mentorship your son needs?
Inside this conversation, you'll learn:
- Why your teenage son's difficult behavior may be protecting something more vulnerable
- Why fixing, lecturing, or problem-solving too quickly can make a teen stop opening up
- How emotional safety changes the way your son experiences you
- Why boys can still need reassurance and connection even while pushing for independence
- How to separate your own history and triggers from what is happening with your son
- What healthy male mentorship can offer a growing boy
- How to look beyond Dad and intentionally build a wider circle of healthy men
- Mike’s simple VAR framework: Vulnerability, Acknowledgment, Reassurance
- What to say when your teen is overwhelmed and snapping at you
- Why seeing your son for who he actually is may matter more than trying to mold him into who you think he should become
One of my favorite ideas from this conversation is simple:
When your teen brings you vulnerability, you don't always have to fix it. Sometimes your job is simply to hold it.
That is connection before correction in action.
Listen to the full episode and consider this question:
Where might my son need more connection, support, or mentorship right now—not more correction?
Mike Elliott is an executive relational coach and men's coach based in British Columbia, Canada.
His interest in relationships and emotional development grew partly from his own history. Mike was adopted twice during his first year of life and describes struggling with relationships, identity, substance use, anger, and disconnection during adolescence and early adulthood.
After his own marriage ended, he devoted himself more deeply to understanding relationships, attachment, emotional development, and men's work. Today, he works with men around relationships, personal responsibility, emotional growth, mentorship, and becoming more grounded leaders in their families and lives.
