298. When Your Teen Son Won’t Talk to You: What to Do Instead of Pushing
You know something is wrong.
Your teenage son is quieter than usual, irritated, withdrawn, or clearly upset.
So you ask:
“What happened?”
“Are you okay?”
“Did something happen at school?”
And all you get back is:
“I’m fine.”
Or worse:
“Mom, leave me alone.”
When you’re worried about your child, it can feel almost impossible not to keep asking.
But sometimes, the harder we pursue connection, the farther away our teenager moves.
In this short Thursday Quick Reset, I’m sharing a simple shift that can completely change these moments:
Open the door. Don’t drag him through it.
You’ll learn why repeated questions can feel like pressure to an overwhelmed teenager and what to say instead.
I’m also giving you three specific scripts you can use when:
You know something is wrong but your teen says he’s fine
Your son seems overwhelmed and needs space
He snaps, “Leave me alone”
We’ll also talk about why some of the best conversations with teenagers happen sideways—in the car, walking the dog, making food, or sitting together without the pressure of a formal conversation.
The goal isn’t to get your teenager to tell you everything.
And connection does not mean your son never pulls away.
Adolescence is supposed to include independence and separation.
The goal is to build a relationship where your teenager knows:
“I can come back here when I’m ready.”
Because your job isn’t to make him talk.
Your job is to make the relationship safe enough that when he wants to talk, he knows where to come.
As I say often:
The relationship is the intervention.
Listen to Episode 298 and practice just one change this week:
Instead of asking another question, try:
“You don’t have to talk about it right now. I’m around if you want me.”
Then give it some space.
