Vaping is on the rise—and teens are getting better at hiding it.

As a single parent, you may feel like you're constantly playing catch-up with what's going on in your child's world. And when it comes to topics like vaping, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or unsure how to even start the conversation.
In this blog, based on our latest episode of The Single Parenting Reset Show, I sat down with Jessica Stewart, a respiratory therapist and single mom, to explore how single parents can spot early signs of vaping and step in—without destroying the relationship.

🔍 Why This Matters for Single Parents of Tweens and Teens
Whether your child is in 6th grade or a junior in high school, they are likely exposed to vaping—through peers, social media, or even curiosity.
As a single parent, you’re navigating these challenges solo. The pressure to manage behavior, protect your child’s health, and keep communication open is very real.

🚩 Here Are 5 Signs Your Teen May Be Vaping:

Irritability and Mood Swings
Nicotine withdrawal can make teens edgy, anxious, or quick to anger—especially if they haven’t had access for a few hours.
Declining Focus or Concentration
Nicotine impacts the brain’s ability to focus, particularly in school settings.
Sudden Trips Outside or to the Bathroom
Frequent, unexplained disappearances—especially with a sense of urgency—could be red flags.
Unfamiliar Devices or Scents
Vape pens are often disguised as USBs or other small devices. Sweet, fruity scents may linger even without smoking.
Changes in Peer Group or Social Behavior
Shifting friend groups or secretive behavior can signal deeper changes, including experimentation.

💬 How to Step In Without Breaking Trust
Jessica and I both agree: your first response matters more than you think.
If you discover vaping, avoid reacting with anger or shame. Instead:
Take a breath before confronting your teen

  • Lead with curiosity, not punishment
  • Use “I” statements to share your concerns
  • Ask open-ended questions like: “What do you know about vaping?” or “Has this come up at school?”

✅ Parenting Tips for Managing Behavior and Improving Communication
Start Early: Don’t wait for them to be caught. Conversations with tweens can prevent problems with teens.

Use Real Examples: Teens respond well to stories and real-world consequences—not lectures.

Give Them Language to Say No: Practice responses like, “I’m in sports,” or “My family has asthma.”

Make a Quit Plan Together: If they're already vaping, work on small, supported steps toward quitting—possibly with a pediatrician or a quit app.

You don’t have to do this alone.
